REALITY REVIEW - The Apprentice 6
04: Episode 4 : Deviated by Trump - Task analysis
29 January 2007

This week, game started when Surya joined Arrow. At first I was thinking, why did the transfer occurred at night as usually, when team is largely unequal, they got to pick before the game started. Then I realize that they (the production) had to do that to maintain the 'have' and 'have not' theme.

Because they do have gap after the task and before the result of winning team was announced, so it is much worse to show Surya move to the other team on that time. Okay.

This episode is great. I love the fact that Arrow won. But I hate the editing. Why? There's not much that we can see along the task. Before they started the task, it took 10 minutes including part where Heidi try to motivate her teammates. I'm fine with it but when it reduce the airtime of the task, it kinda frustrate me a little bit.

Usually, what we see is what we get. We see Aaron's team did some banner, get some order, Surya asked Aaron to call Frank and Tim back to help as the place getting crowded. That's good enough. But how about Heidi's team? Not much. We see some problem that Marisa done. That's it. We can't really see what happen in the process of selling. Is there a lot of people. I know I demand too much by asking for this, as it's not just about the task.

But I just checked out Apprentice Official Site and there's a deleted scene entitled Tardy Twosome: Derek and Marisa Late to Training (Deleted, Week 4), showing Derek and Marisa came late to the training, which might be the reason they ended being in marketing team. My point is, as a viewer I love to have options of who should be fired. It's not affecting the result, but I guess, again as a viewer, I feel satisfied when I make the right guess of who should be fired. Since episode 2, it's pretty obvious of who's the trouble in the team.

For people who haven't watch the clip, I describe about it a little bit. The clip show Derek and Marissa came late to the training (yeah, the title speak for itself). But it's not just about being late. They are also disallowed from playing with the cash and order machine. From a viewer perspective, I think that this team lose a lot of manpower because of that. Regardless the fact that they had enough of people at the counter, if something turn out, the place get crowded for example, this could be a major case.

Well, I wrote paragraphs just made my point about showing more minutes of task being played out. Now let's get real to the task analysis.

Why do Heidi's team lost? I won't say that they lost because they don't think out of box. But they lost because they don't even think in the box itself. How does it happen?

Remember when Donald Trump introducing a task. He will be talk about something behind it. Like talking about how much a product gross value over America, or what is the place significant for. This time, Trump told them about automobile and how people did a lot of jobs using their vehicles. And he said that the drive-thru restaurant has been a tremendous business (I'm copying what he said)

Good.

And then the manager of the chicken shop told what the task is all about. At the end, he said that the team that sell the most of their new version of that chicken stuff win. So, what is the deal with those introduction of automobile and drive-thru restaurant?

This is the point where Kinetic miss. They was orientated to think that this task has something to do with the drive-thru thingy. That's why we can see how Kinetic put their effort on the drive-thru path. They gave sample. And you can see two persons doing that job.

Arrow on the other hand wasn't deviated by what Trump said at the beginning so they are focusing on their sales. You can see how Aaron didn't really care about the queue in the drive-thru section. Because logically, you can see that they will surely be more people in the restaurant, having ordinary order than the customers in the drive-thru. So, it's wasting time to force, or in more polite word, insist the customer in drive-thru to buy the product while they can simply let the customer in the restaurant have the sample (and avoid waiting outside, feeling hot).

So at the end, Kinetic actually didn't make any great effort of marketing. Who to blame? I believe Heidi is up to blame for that lose. No strategy. Just sell.

You see what Tim and Frank did? I guess it's overrated to say that selling 20 product at one spot as a big deal. Not about the number, but their selling technique is questionable. Imagine if someone like them came into your office/house and ask you whether you want to buy a grill chicken product. He didn't give you any sample and you don't really know what are you buying. Will you get it. No, except if those guys followed by a cameraman with a big video camera on his shoulder (not the one that we have for our home video), then we might say yes as we are pretty excited to imagine we are gonna appear on tv. Well, if that's not general case, it maybe me. But at least it works for the other 20 customers.

At the end of the day, Arrow deserved to win and Heidi deserved to be fired for not thinking even in the box. But Marisa was fired for being too annoying.

Pick of the week: Aaron
Bad to good impression: Frank & Tim
Good to bad impression: Heidi
Cute personality : Muna
Started to appear on screen: Derek (the one with Marisa, remember) & Surya
Who are they?: Aimee, Angela, Kristine, Jenn
