10: Episode 11 : Tim was fighting for
life - Task Analysis
2 April 2007
Appearance
I lose my faith of the Apprentice
boardroom after watching this episode. Yeah, maybe because
Tim is one of my favorite, but I started to ask the
fairness of the interview process.
I am not happy with the boardroom
interview. Most of the time, people get eliminated because
they cannot stand for themselves. This time, everybody wants
Tim to get fired, except Heidi maybe. Let's see what
happened.
The issue is simple - Tim being a
distraction because of his relationship with Nicole. They
said that he is disloyal, and went blah blah blah. I don't
really think that Tim is a really strong player, but in the
boardroom, he brought up a lot of good case. Such as all of
the ideas were coming from him, he didn't mix up the
relationship and the task, and he even point out that he was
a better player than Frank.
Trump said before firing Tim, 'She
(Nicole) has become a distraction and I don't care what you
say, and most importantly, you lose the task because of your
idea. Tim, you're fired'.
At this point, I wonder, who was
getting distracted? Was it the team or just Tim? And as
Trump point out that he 'didn't care what Tim said', that
was the time I feel that this boardroom session is useless.
Trump clearly came up with a prejudgment, and he should
simply fire Tim when he got into the room.
Heidi even asked the team about
what kind of distraction caused by Tim. Nobody said
anything. That is a good
point, but I was frustrated that Trump couldn't see that.
I keep wondering, is this interview
process really useful, in search of a subordinate. Since the
first season of The Apprentice, all of the winner was the
one who are confident looking person, didn't talk too much,
didn't have a hype kind of personality. Tim wouldn't win
even if he didn't make any mistake. Every time the use the
term 'you are not fit in this company'. By saying that, I also
want to predict that Nicole and Frank will never win this
game. Let's see and then we conclude.
The task
Now, the task. Arrow came up with
'it's for everyone' theme. I like the concept. It is really
natural and it always bring the element of 'belonging' when
you read an advertisement. But again, a simple question, why
are the advertiser keep putting model or supermodel to
advertise their product? Simple, no need to go to any
marketing class to answer, it is because they want
us to feel like we are turning to that people (model) when
we use the product.
Remember having some cloth that
looks so great on the catalog and then when we tried on, it
didn't really goes well but because it looks nice on
somebody else, we feel like it was great on us? Same case as
wearing same looking cloth that celebrity wore, they even
have that column in teen-magazine, and some brand that
provide similarly looks jeans or shirt. It doesn't really
works for everyone, but we still feel great to have it and
wear it.
Lot of mumbling again, but my point
is simple. Arrow's first error is because their demographic
wasn't really wide (they do use a lot of word 'demographic'
this season). They have people from every color, but they
don't have people of different ages - no teenager, and most
importantly for an advertisement, no supermodel looking
person. Mix it up, and then you call 'product for everyone'.
Second, their scientific
explanation is too much. I can't really read what they
wrote, but it looks more like a pamphlet than a newspaper
advertisement. Ivanka was right about making it short.
Third, this is not a weight-loss
product, where you have to show 'before and after' shot. And
yeah, Trump was right that they look like they are all
sleepy rather than having a bad breath. By the way, we never
see a bunch of people try to smell their breath especially
when they know they have once.
Oh okay, now I started to see that
this whole idea of Tim was crap. Can I say I change my mind
about what I wrote previously? Naah, I don't think I should
say that.
I prefer to say that this is a
team's mistake. They didn't have any effort to list down the
ideas in their brainstorming session. Frank didn't held a
good photo shoot session. Stephanie never step up and all
she can do is presenting which didn't really contribute much
in this task compared to the car showcase task.
And what did James do? Yeah, you
name one if there was any.
