Halal Food
For human, eating is a necessity. For
Muslim, eating halal food is the necessity.
First, bear in mind that Muslim is
minority in UK. So don't expect to find halal food
everywhere. But don't think it's really hard to get halal
food here.
Around London
There are quite a number of halal store that sells halal
chicken and meat. And there is a lot of fried chicken shop
around London. Sometimes they don't put 'halal' word in
front of their restaurant but you can try to ask them or
notice some sign showing that they are Muslim.
I live in Yiewsley, UB7. The halal
fast food restaurant in here put '4 Qul' sticker on the
mirror. I just notice after 2 months and half living here.
There's lot of Muslim people in East
London, so you can easily find halal shop there.
Birmingham
Went there once. Just stop by to eat. There is a street full
of halal restaurant.
Elsewhere
From the hypermarket such as Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury and
Iceland, they sell fish in fillet form. Usually UK Muslim
people (from my observation) take a look whether the food is
suitable for vegetarian or not. So that it is much easier to
determine whether it is halal or not.
And don't think that everything with
'chicken' on its name is non-halal when you are in the
hypermarket. Because there is instant noodle of chicken
flavour, but it is suitable for vegetarian (due to the
flavour made by soy milk).
Note: Some restaurant put a note
saying that they sell halal food, but on the same time they
are using the same cooking utensil to cook non-halal thing.
According to my lecturer in USM, we can't consume food being
cooked that way. So, take a sneak peek for the menu.
Place to pray
For daily prayer, home-sweet-home is
the easiest place. But if you have to attend lecture or
class, find a place to pray. In Brunel University, there is
a prayer room. So, no trouble there. Consult with the
university you are studying about this matter.
Friday prayer - There is a lot of
mosque around London. Not sure about UK itself. But in major
city, there's no problem about the mosque. But if you are a
full time student, it might be a major case if you have a
class around Friday prayer time.
But usually they will start Friday
prayer at 1, regardless what time Zohor is. That is because,
most of office/lecture take a break at 1pm - 2pm. Another
Brunel University example, we are having Friday Prayer in
Boiler Room. Consult the university student regarding this
matter. |
